University Of Lincoln: Student Wellbeing Centre

Wellbeing Welcome Week Ambassador

July 2021 - July 2022

Every year, the Student Wellbeing Centre organizes an orientation week called WOW (Wellbeing Welcome Week) aimed at easing the transition to university for new students at the University of Lincoln who have mental health or disability diagnoses. Recognizing that starting university can be daunting, especially for those managing challenging conditions, the WOW experience provides essential support. As part of the delivery team, I joined as a selected student member who had benefited from the service and had a passion for supporting others. My dedication and compassion quickly earned praise from senior staff members after the first day of WOW.

During WOW, many attendees were strangers to each other, highlighting the importance of fostering connections to alleviate the initial stresses of university life. I often found myself offering companionship to students who felt out of place and simply sought human connection. One particularly rewarding experience occurred at the beginning of the week when a visibly anxious student approached me during check-in. Despite providing their registered name, they expressed a desire to change their name and pronouns to align with their gender identity. Witnessing their distress, I offered my support and reassurance, ensuring they felt comfortable while discreetly addressing their request with senior staff. It was a privilege to provide assistance and companionship until they felt ready to join the group fully. Later, I learned that they approached me because of the LGBTQAI+ inclusive pin on my lanyard, underscoring the importance of visible support and inclusion in creating a welcoming environment.

British Heart Foundation - Lincoln

Store Volunteer

June 2021 - June 2022

My role at the store involves a dynamic set of responsibilities that shift daily depending on the sector I'm assigned to. This flexibility ensures that every part of the store operates seamlessly and efficiently, without any gaps in coverage. When working on the shop floor, my tasks range from designing eye-catching displays that showcase desirable items based on current market trends to maintaining the store's cleanliness and organization. Interacting with customers is a key aspect of my role, where I provide top-notch customer service and process payments at the till. Leveraging my communication skills, I also encourage voluntary donations for the charity's research efforts during transactions.

In the stockroom, the workload is diverse, requiring each staff member to play to their strengths and interests to maintain smooth operations. I meticulously sort through donated goods, assess their condition, and prepare them for display, ensuring that pricing aligns with consumer demand and market trends to maximize profits. Additionally, I research items of unknown value to optimize the charity's income, with valuable items often listed on their online eBay store to reach a wider audience. Through these tasks, I contribute to the store's overall success in supporting the charity's mission.

University Of Lincoln: Student Wellbeing Centre

Student Advisory Board

September 2020 - June 2022 (two mandates)

I had the privilege of being part of a panel consisting of fellow students who, like myself, utilized the services provided by the Student Wellbeing Centre during our time at University. Our primary objective was to offer constructive feedback on the various services offered by the Student Wellbeing Team. This involved testing new support approaches before they were rolled out to the broader student community. Additionally, as a member of this panel, I had the opportunity to voice the concerns and perspectives of my peers, ensuring that our collective experiences were accurately represented in discussions and decision-making processes.

Different Light Collective - Festive Fabuloso

Event Crew

December 2021, December 2022

During my second placement, I eagerly joined forces with a renowned events producer in the Lincolnshire region, Mr. Holly. Together, we spearheaded the execution of a new event, "Festive Fabuloso," commissioned by the East Lindsey District Council to revitalize the local high street and promote the Shop Locally ethos across five small towns within the District. One of the highlights of this event was the Marvelous Mechanical Musical Machine, a unique creation resembling an organ, intricately constructed from authentic organ parts. Guests were delighted to interact with this innovative organ, producing an array of sounds from animals to authentic organ music across its five different soundboards. Additionally, in the evening festivities, we collaborated with PopCorn Media to illuminate the town center in a captivating spectacle, showcasing the community in a "different light." Such was the success of the event that I enthusiastically returned to contribute to the 2022 edition.

October 2021

During my involvement in the Frequency Festival, I was an integral part of the volunteer team entrusted with delivering a memorable experience for all our guests. Each shift brought new and exciting responsibilities, ranging from assisting with installations to engaging directly with artists to provide guests with comprehensive information about the art pieces and the festival as a whole. Many of our visitors were passers-by who were unfamiliar with the event, making it crucial for us to convert them into returning attendees for future editions of the festival. Through our interactions and efforts, we aimed to leave a lasting impression that would encourage continued engagement with Frequency and its upcoming events.
